Bride of Deimos, Vol. 1
$9.95
Ikeda, EtsukoAshibe, Yuho (Illustrator)
From Publishers Weekly Originally published in Japan in 1975, and now translated into English, this story retains all its power to chill. Ikeda's collection of eerie episodes is wrapped up in a larger story of forbidden love. Minako, a schoolgirl with flowing blond hair, is approached by a stranger who declares Minako is to be his bride. Suddenly he reveals himself as the devil and informs her there is no escape: all those whom she loves will be destroyed piecemeal until she agrees to be the Bride of Deimos. The rest of the book follows Minako as she attempts to continue her ordinary life, but things aren't the same. A new chum turns out to have killed his mother a few years ago; a favorite teacher ends up being a werewolf who rips out the throat of another of Minako's favorite instructors; and the very cement of the walls of local buildings turns out to be evil, having been mixed with the crushed bones of unfortunate factory workers. Ikeda's vision of love is grim; the book's happiest couple is a maimed race-car driver and his lover, who puts out her own eyes to prove her fidelity. Even they end up dying in a fiery inferno due to a momentary misunderstanding. By the time readers discover why Minako is the chosen one, they've been hung out to dry emotionally. Ashibe's drawings, a dizzying b&w whirl that splashes and curls across the page, use all manner of odd angles and perspective to convey Minako's off-kilter world as she travels a landscape that veers between ordinary and mystical. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. Jason Thompson, Animerica, Dec 2002 "Bride of Deimos is...the right balance between moody atmospherics and stuff actually happening." Book Description Bride of Deimos Vol. 1: Long ago, a brother and sister, lived happily on Mount Olympus until they fell in love. The gods were so angry about their forbidden love that they exiled them from the mountain, turned the brother into a demon, and imprisoned the sister in the deep ocean. As her body rotted under the waves, she asked her demon brother to find a girl that looked like her so that she could possess a new body. In the modern world, the demon finally finds the correct match: a high school girl who looks exactly like his beloved sister. Instead of offering her up for possession, however, the demon falls in love with her. Jealous, his sister sends Death and Onis (two Japanese ghosts) to take the girl's life! This popular manga series was the basis for an anime film directed by Rintaro, who recently won international acclaim for his direction of Metropolis.

Crayon Shinchan, Vol. 1
$9.95
Usui, Yoshito (Illustrator)
From Publishers Weekly Sometimes called the Bart Simpson of Japan, cartoon character Crayon Shinchan has his own TV show and manga series. Readers shouldn't be fooled by the flat line drawings and the cover's primary colors, or by the innocent-looking little kid, because five-year-old Shinchan relentlessly sasses the adults around him and pulls perverted pranks that would make even Bart blush. One minute he's getting ready for a bath like any other kid his age; the next, he is teasing his mom about the size of her breasts. At school, he torments his principal and tells his kindergarten teacher that for Christmas he wants Britney Spears "right out of the shower." Shinchan's antics are so powerful, almost every episode ends with an adult in tears, their world shattered by embarrassment. Each incident takes place over three pages, which is sometimes long for bathroom humor. Though it's initially hard to see who the character would appeal to besides 10-year-old boys, eventually the pace and rhythm of the silliness takes on a charm of its own. (However, those who don't like this kind of humor will tire quickly of the book's shameless clowning.) The series must lose something in the translation: some of the jokes and dialogue are awkwardly phrased, and Shinchan's love of all-American Oreos and Britney Spears is too forced to be effective. Still, those who want a peek into Japanese popular culture, and who enjoy light, family-based (if not family-oriented) comics, might want to keep this on the bathroom shelf next to Calvin & Hobbes. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. Greg McElhatton ,icomics, Dec 2002 this graphic novel will have you in stitches...this is the funniest book I've read all year." Book Description CRAYON SHINCHAN VOL.1 Famous as a Japanese anime TV show, Crayon Shin-Chan follows the daily life of a five-year-old boy whose bodily functions, offensive comments, and outrageous behavior consistently annoy his parents and land him in hot water. A national phenomenon in Japan, this shocking and hilarious comic celebrates the terrible power of destruction and indecency wielded by toddlers everywhere!

Wong, Tony (Illustrator)Mayung, W. (Translator)Ip, Scorpy (Translator)
From Publishers Weekly This captivating, strange book may be most readers' first look at Hong Kong manga. If they've watched any martial arts movies, they'll know what to expect: stunning action scenes that are a lot more important than the underlying plot (in fact, the action may even take the place of a plot). Wong's energetic pen and ink line drawings of colliding bodies are effective, complemented by the rather gaudy coloring. Readers who want stop-action pictures of martial arts combat can enjoy the book on that level, since they fill most of the pages. Beyond that, the story is simultaneously complicated and simpleminded. Although Earth has fallen into the hands of a dictator after meteorites hit the planet, converting most of the surface to molten lava and killing most of the population, the cities and landscapes of the future world look exactly like contemporary settings. The only real change is that the dictator has the power to stage extravagant gladiatorial tournaments to perfect his high-tech warriors. Those who resist the dictator fight with old-style, spiritual martial arts. Their champion is the teenaged Tiger. In this volume, the first of many to come, Tiger goes up against Single-Minded Arhat, Regent of Tibet. The combat is wild-"Titanium doors crumple like tissue paper"-when the two square off for 30 pages of tech-art-enhanced combat. If the final effect is less than thrilling, it may be because the text translation is stiff or that the storytelling conventions of a different culture are unfamiliar to U.S. readers. But comics fans can still enjoy this book by just looking at the pretty pictures. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. PATRICK MACIAS, Animerica "A better ride for truly jaded thrill seekers would be hard to find." Book Description Mega Dragon & Tiger: Future Kung Fu Action Vol.1 In 1999, asteroids bombard the earth and the world is plunged into chaos. From the ashes, a new society arises where only the strong survive. In this society, scientists give the elite superpowers, while the weak are left at their mercy. These elites rule the world with an iron fist. In 2020, two heroes rise up to battle the injustice of the elite and restore peace. They are known as Mega Dragon and Tiger.

My Sassy Girl Volume 1
$13.95
Kim, Ho SikDae, Hong MinSanders, Shawn
From the Publisher My Sassy Girl is a funny and touching romantic comedy following the lives of two college students brought together by fate. Geon-woo is a clean-cut naive boy who becomes involved with a beautiful "Sassy" girl who manages to wrap him around her finger as he honestly tries to see her through troubled times. The story is filled with humor and surprising events as the two try to find out if opposites really do attract! My Sassy Girl first hit the scene in Korea as a mega popular movie in 2001. The film was number one at the box office for six straight weeks in Korea and sold over 20,000 tickets per day in Hong Kong. It was the second highest grosser of 2001 (accumulating more box office loot than SHREK, HARRY POTTER or LORD OF THE RINGS). ComicsOne's translated graphic novel adaptation is a full-color title containing a dynamic and compelling artistic style. The book's sassy, uppity and assertive female protagonist is far from your traditional cutesy mealy-mouthed anime girl. She's got spunk, attitude and is not afraid to speak her mind, which often lands her self-proclaimed guardian Geon-woo in big trouble. But this makes for some occurrences that are just down-right hilarious! Book Description Geon-woo is a college student, and a bit of a dork, who thinks his life would be complete if he only had a cute girlfriend. He'd better be careful what he wishes for, because it just might come true. He's mistaken as the boyfriend of a drunken girl on the subway one night...and soon is wrapped around her little finger in the worst of ways. Does he really want to help her feel better about her recent breakup, are his intentions honorable...or is he just scared she'll tear him a new one? This is just the beginning of the wild relationship Geon-woo is about to embark on with this forceful girl.

Hayashiya, Shizuru (Illustrator)Seto, AndyHayashiya, Shizuru
From Publishers Weekly Teenager Kei Kusanagi is sleepy the day this story begins, having spent the night scanning the sky for UFOs. Too bad he isn't fully alert when his new teacher, Mizuho Kazami, arrives. Then he might have seen she's an alien sent to monitor proceedings on Earth to ensure that her own people avoid the mistakes humans make. He finds out soon enough, however, when she teleports the two of them into a locked gym closet, resulting in a scandal that can be solved only, according to Kei's uncle, with the two of them marrying. That ceremony completed, Kei must try to hide the fact from his friends while attending school and trying to make sense of the strange turn his life has taken. Just 18, Kei is scarcely ready for the complications of marriage with a human, let alone with a jealous alien who is dealing with her own identity crisis. It seems Mizuho volunteered for Earth duty because she is half-human. Along with long legs and an hourglass figure, she has a human ability to feel envy, donning camouflage short shorts to tail Kei when he goes to the movies with a female friend. With an abundance of scenes involving teleporting and loss of consciousness; a never-explained Smurf-like creature named Marie who is involved in piloting Mizuho's spaceship; and lettering that sacrifices readability for fidelity to the layout of the Japanese original, this is a challenging read. Still, Hayashiya's artwork is all good-natured enthusiasm, with the energy of teen confusion and Mizuho's abundant charms, rather than extra-terrestrial machinery, filling most of the panels. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. Francis Li, The Ticker, March 2003 "Overall, the series has a good storyline that works around the typical love-drama story, but adds its own twist." Book Description ONEGAI TEACHER VOL.1 Kei Kusanagi was your typical ordinary senior in High School. However his life became more complicated the day his class got a new teacher. On the outside she looked like your typical beautiful young school teacher, but Kei had witnessed her secret the night before. When exploring a strange light in a nearby forest the night before Kei discovers a mysterious floating woman. To his surprise she winds up being his new teacher and next door neighbor. Now can Kei balance the craziness of school life, his new neighbor, and the fact she's an alien?

From Publishers Weekly Supposedly set in ancient China, this Hong Kong manga actually deals with experience only tangentially related to this world. In the comic's world, it isn't the Royal Government that controls humanity, but the World Fighting Association, so the only thing that matters in life is martial arts supremacy. When two kung fu masters meet, they immediately begin a wild battle to the death, even though the story points out they're acting insanely, perhaps urged on by their magic swords. Watching this battle are the minions of Lord Conquer, a mighty kung fu master who is plotting to take over the world but unexpectedly takes the two fighters as his pupils because he admires their spirit. This summary makes the action sound more reasonable than it actually is. Nevertheless, a sensational movie was based on the comic, which is 87 volumes long. The comic's popularity may just be the art; like most Hong Kong martial arts comics, the art is detailed, dramatic and hyperkinetically active. Much like the best martial arts movies, the art uses familiar objects merely as the starting point in its design. The combat scenes are phantasmagoric, swirling ballets. Ma shatters and reshapes landscapes and human faces for dramatic effect and uses nature as raw material for visual experimentation. In one scene, wind-tattered waves from a flooding river are frozen in space, as motionless and solid as the human body tumbling toward them and as luminous as the magic sword hanging in the air. Ma's universe is strange, wonderful and fantastic. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. PULP, July 2002 "The best English treatment of a Hong Kong comic to date..." Book Description STORM RIDERS takes us on a journey through an amazing world in ancient China where, aside from the hegemony of the Royal Government, an individual and separate society exists: The World Fighting Association. Forgetting the evil deeds he's committed in his lifetime; he takes on Wind and Cloud, two very talented and young martial artists, as his disciples. His destiny to be the Ultimate Master draws nigh; however, destiny has a will of her own and at the crux of the impending maelstrom blow Wind and Cloud

Story of the Tao
$13.95
Lau, Ding KinSeto, Andy (Illustrator)
From Publishers Weekly This historical fantasy from Hong Kong is steeped in Asian myth and legend, though to no understandable end because of confusing storytelling. The overarching plot is built on an ancient conflict between spirituality and evil. Taoism, Buddhism, Shinto and mysticism have earthly guardians called the Four Saints, who engage in lengthy battles against the Clan of Seven Evils and, it seems, each other. Their mission is to "teach people to become living deities of their own beliefs, finally entering the world of Nirvana, bringing peace to the human world." Their long fights are punctuated by long monologues riddled with religious and spiritual terminology, not all of it really decipherable, owing to either poor source material or incomplete translations. The first two-thirds of the story consist of these battle scenes, with character introductions and background stories appearing at the very end, forcing bewildered readers to move back through the book to understand what has just happened. In the tale, a king's son, heir to enormous powers and destined to be a Buddha, is threatened by his evil stepmother, now the queen of the realm. Transforming Asian religions into complex mythological superheroics is a unique idea in comics, but here, the backstory, constantly alluded to and never explained, renders the plot indecipherable. The artwork is muscular and well executed, if short on storytelling technique beyond fisticuffs and shouting. It's conceivable that the overall story might make sense in future volumes, but as it is, in story and art, this mythos is a mess. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. Dr. Brown, Animerica, Jan 2003 "The result of all this is one of the best comics I have read in my life. " Book Description King Lee instructs the younger of two sons (Prince Lee) to seek the path of Buddha and all it's wonderful powers. Soon after, the King and his closest heir die suspiciously, and the ambitious Queen is suspected of treason. The Queen is powerful and well protected by many skilled Kung Fu masters. Now earthly representatives of four religious sects, Taoism, Buddhism, Mysticism and Shingon rally together to teach and protect young Prince Lee from his malevolent stepmother the Queen and her many denizens. Little do they know it will take their combined efforts to defeat a foe that threatens spirituality as they know it.

From the Publisher Junji Ito (b. 1963) is best known for the `Tomie` series, but he`s produced countless bone-chilling horror collections. He received the prestigious Kazuo Umezu Award for manga artistry and he cites Mr. Umezu as his main artistic influence. Book Description Tomie`s not dead yet. No matter how many times you cut her up, bury her, or drown her, she comes back for more. Every inch of her is a droplet of hellish flesh, and she doesn`t know the meaning of the word `forgiveness`. Junji Ito`s masterpiece mingles modern sensibility with gut-wrenching psychosis--and best of all, Tomie`s not your ordinary monster. Her human emotions and desires make her more terrifying than any horror movie character.
