Book Description Dr. Caspar Nordling is developing a micro-organism that is deadly to Aliens, but not to people. He's had a lot of luck engineering selective viruses to kill rats and weevils, but this is something altogether different. Highly speculative. Highly volatile. Just like the doctor himself. In a remote sector of the galaxy, on an isolated Grant-Corp space station, the thin line between science and horror is narrowing, and Philip and Joy Strunk, two company employees, are finding themselves on the short end of the cut. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From Publishers Weekly Sala's stories combine all the key elements of classic crime fiction--down-at-the-heel detectives, strange murders, mad geniuses, beautiful women, sudden disappearances, psychotic murderers--in tongue-in-cheek yarns more likely to amuse than to disturb. The stories exude a cartoonish aura of menace and amiable dementia. In the first story, nebbish Avery Finch, author of How to Be Polite in an Impolite World , is offered $10,000 to find a kidnapped cat and becomes enmeshed with a murderous cult whose members stalk about in silly cat masks. In another tale, a successful painter and cartoonist is hypnotized and left without memory by an unscrupulous art dealer out to steal the rights to the artist's inane but potentially valuable comic strip. In a third story, a once successful detective tries to reclaim his former stature by tracking down a beautiful woman whose disappearance seems related to the notorious pillow killer, a strange urban menace who goes around suffocating unwary commuters at the bus stops. Sala's stylish black-and-white drawings are a stitch, serving as deft visual send-ups of his comically macabre plots. Copyright 1994 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Publishers Weekly Just as the the word "weird" has many implications and shades of meaning, so too does the latest--weird--work by this gifted and perplexing writer. As Carroll ( Bones of the Moon ; Sleeping in Flame ) himself says, "Life has a habit of turning dark corners." Applied here, this observation seems an understatement: these convoluted corners are both light and dark, are many, varied and constantly challenging. Flashing back and forth in time, the story concerns the apparent suicide of filmmaker Philip Strayhorn, whose bizarre Midnight series has attained cult status. Strayhorn's best friend, Weber Gregston, a filmmaker with a more intellectual bent, is drawn into a dizzying series of events by a videotape that Philip leaves him. The wickedly imaginative twists and turns that follow are only one facet of this intriguing tale, which seems at times like a framework on which to hang a myriad of metaphysical notions. What, for instance, is one to make of a tattoo of a crow that comes alive in an airplane lavatory? Carroll's style is elegant; his writing is by turns disturbing, fey, sardonic, grim--frequently within a single paragraph. The unexpected lies at the heart of this novel, and readers seeking a provocative and stimulating--though not always easy--read will be rewarded. Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From the Publisher Izzy has happy memories from when she was very young, and her father had been one of the greatest Bards in the land. But that had been before she had been given over to a foster mother to live a life of poverty, hard work and misery. As Izzy looks forward 19 days to her freedom, a new ruler seizes the throne of her country. Now Izzy and her friend Giraud, the only surviving heir of an out-of-favor lord, are running for their lives. From The Critics VOYA Nineteen-year-old apprentice weaver Isbetta is ready to become a journeyman, as soon as her craft-master Marda acknowledges her skill. Then Izzy inadvertently learns that Marda, Izzy's foster parent, and the burgher Aymar work for the mysterious Black Heron; Marda and Aymar killed Izzy's bard father years ago, Giraud's father and brothers more recently, and are now plotting to kill Giraud before selling Izzy to the local whoremaster. In a desperate attempt to outmaneuver Aymar's thugs, Izzy and Giraud run straight into the clutches of a nasty, cave-dwelling nantatsu. Saved only by the nantatsu's belief that Izzy might be the Worldsinger, the one destined to free the beast from a bard's spell, Izzy and Giraud must ascend Hearthold Mountain to sing the spell-breaking song. Singing the song, Izzy finds an unforeseen power within and unwittingly initiates the transformation of the world into a horrifying evil that only she can reverse. To do so she must travel to the bards' stronghold and convince them to assist her, never suspecting the pervasiveness of the insidious Black Heron's influence. One of a series of books written to extend the world of The Bard's Tale computer game, Curse of the Black Heron is barely salvaged from its terribly trite beginning by the human foibles of Izzy and the creditably original scenarios that ensue following her singing on Hearthold Mountain. Having enough potential to tease, this could have been a sure-fire winner with better editing. As it stands, however, players of the computer game and readers of the series will be interested, while other fantasy readers may not wish to slog through the first ninety pages to discover the more original and engaging story. Amazon.com Is there anyone cooler than Boba Fett? Like a cross between Clint Eastwood and Chow Yun Fat--but with a jetpack and kneepad rocket dart launchers--Fett has always symbolized cool, quiet power. If Fett wants you, you're as good as got (that ridiculous incident over the Great Pit of Carkoon in Return of the Jedi notwithstanding). So any book or comic featuring his royal Fettness had better be good. Fortunately, our boy gets his due in this quality Dark Horse collection of three previously published comics (Bounty on Bar-Kooda, When the Fat Lady Swings, and Murder Most Foul). The story, by John Wagner of Judge Dredd fame, is by no means brilliant, but it's clever enough to rise a cut above the more schlocky Star Wars spinoff fare. What really sets this collection apart, though, are the moody colors and expert composition of Cam Kennedy (Star Wars: Dark Empire). From our favorite bounty hunter nonchalantly capping some thug without even turning around to breezing through the defenses of a H'unn's criminal stronghold, Death, Lies, and Treachery is classic Fett. --Paul Hughes

Book Description British annuals are normally a collection of new and reprint material with color and black and white interiors. Published annually in hard cover, they are dated, if at all, one year ahead of their copyright year. Most annuals contain illustrated text stories, comic strips and features such as puzzles, games, even articles. The art, mainly unaccredited, is average to good. The Eagle Comic 1950-1969 was one of the flagship titles of British comics. Its reincarnation in the 1980¿s had a hard act to follow. Like its predecessor the new Eagle¿s strips covers a range of genres from crime to adventure but it is best known as the home of the Science Fiction strip, Dan Dare Pilot of the future. This EAGLE annual features a nine page painted Dan Dare strip plus a nine page painted Doomlord.

Book Description When George Lucas made the first Star Wars motion picture, a scene was shot wherein Han Solo met Jabba the Hutt. But as any Star Wars fan knows, Jabba didn't appear until the third film, Return of the Jedi. Lucas had hit the technological wall -- he couldn't craft Jabba the way he wanted, so he simply removed the scene from his initial, ground-breaking movie. Now, two decades later, he has taken that footage -- with a young Harrison Ford portraying a brash Han Solo -- and added Jabba to it. The result is incredible. The hair will stand up on the back of your neck, and you'll feel twenty years younger as you experience that remarkable thrill all over again. That's the same feeling you'll have as you read the all-new adaptation of Star Wars: A New Hope. Crafted completely from scratch by Bruce Jones, Eduardo Barreto, and longtime Star Wars artist Al Williamson, with a stunning cover by Greg and Tim Hildebrandt, this adaptation includes the new scenes from the Special Edition. For those who cannot wait for four monthly issues, and for the new readers who will surely come looking for this comic, we are publishing this simultaneously as a trade-paperback collection and as a four-issue, monthly comics series. Experience it again, for the very first time.

Amazon.com From acclaimed Japanese writer/artists Masamune Shirow, the creator of Appleseed, Orion, and Dominion: Tank Police comes a new dystopian tale of tough-talking cyborgs, political intrigues, and the kind of actions best left covert! The beautiful and deadly Major Kusanagi and her crack team of internal operatives are sent to investigate a government factory with questionable labor practices. As it turns out, their labor practices aren't the only thing to be questioned when the major and her team are met by a most unwelcoming welcome wagon! From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. First published in English in 1995, this classic cyberpunk manga is the story of a future society dependent on cyborgs (humans with machine parts). It's 2029, and Japan has gathered a troop of military cyborgs in Section Nine, a secret paramilitary security squad. The S-9 squad leader is the tall and sexy female cyborg Major Kusanagi, and the men under her command include the gruff Batou and the uncertain (and mostly human) rookie Togusa. Bafflingly metaphysical and utterly gripping, the book is an episodic chronicle of S-9's missions that illustrates the fluid nature of crime, espionage and geopolitical skullduggery in a world where human personality, vast data networks and cybernetic technology have essentially fused into a single social matrix. The team tracks criminals, spies and terrorists who hack networks or illegally copy the ghosts (or souls) of enslaved humans into black market cyborgs. Their ultimate case is the Puppeteer, a deadly cyberterrorist who turns out to be a ghostless, "self-aware" artificial intelligence spontaneously created out of the vast sea of networked information. Masamune's b&w drawings are dynamic and beautifully gestural; he vividly renders the awesome urban landscape of a futuristic, supertechnological Japan. From Publishers Weekly This well-crafted collection of comics adaptations of stories by Vachss, creator of the popular Burke mystery series and a former federal investigator, is an unlikely artistic triumph. Vachss, who wrote an authorized novel based on Batman in 1995, is not shy about moralizing; he operates in an ethical gray area, where traditional lines between good and bad, cop and criminal, are constantly blurred and broken. While highlighting the law's ambiguities, Vachss also teases out lessons and consequences for his characters, usually in the form of unexpected endings. No matter how hard the characters try, they can't escape brutal victimization. An unbalanced hostage negotiator, having successfully freed a captive, shoots the unarmed kidnapper at the end of "Hostage," and in "Replay," an over-eager phone sex operator realizes the man whose pedophilic fantasies she's entertaining is her own father, and she was his first victim. A young gang member, bragging of his successful (and bloody) initiation rite, is killed by associates of his victims; and so on. Left alone, a few of these stark, graphic stories go a long way, but enhanced by artwork contributed by a group of superb cartoonists, they come alive in new and unexpected ways. The artists include David Lloyd, Bruce Jones and Warren Pleece, who share a shadowy pen and ink style particularly well suited to these pieces' mood and the subject matter. George Pratt's expressionistic work illuminates the despair at the heart of these stories, while Gary Gianni's accurate line work superbly depicts the urban landscape. Such a diverse group of art styles keeps the anthology from groaning under its own weight and provides different interpretations of Vachss's otherwise fairly similar stories. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.--This text refers to the Paperback edition. Book Description Andrew Vachss has long been a favorite of crime/suspense fiction lovers. His novels have helped to re-define the genre. He defends children. He does it in the courtrooms as an attorney, and he does it in the more public forum of publishing as a writer. What he has learned in his investigations a lawyer is translated - as `fiction` - in his writing. HARD LOOKS, features some of the best stories from the original comics anthology, as well as four new, never-before-printed adaptations. In Vachss' own words, `I may not be a good writer, but I write for a good reason. And if that reason isn't apparent by the time you've finished this collection, I didn't get the job done.`

Amazon.com Unlike authors who agree to have their work adapted to comics yet remain distant from the finished product, Harlan Ellison loves comics and loves that he has his own comic book. Dream Corridor is essential for die-hard Ellison fans, not only because of the 14 adaptations of his short stories, but also because it contains 5 all-new prose pieces. One of the prose pieces, "Chatting with Anubis," won the Deathrealm Award and the Horror Writers Association's Bram Stoker Award for best short story of 1995. If you're not familiar with Ellison's work, Dream Corridor is a great sampler, and it's loaded with a diversity of art styles with illustrations by top-notch artists, including Doug Wildey, Michael T. Gilbert, Gary Gianni, Teddy Kristiansen, and David Lapham. "The End Time of Leinard," "On the Slab," "Knox," "The Rough Boys," and "Cold Friend" are just a few of the stories adapted.

From School Library Journal Grade 4-7-British narrator Alex Jennings does a smashing job with C. S. Lewis' delightful classic (HarperCollins Children's, 1994), the third story in the Narnia series. The tale begins with a poor slave boy named Shasta escaping from his adopted fisherman father who plans to sell him to a brutish stranger. A dignified talking war horse named Bree helps Shasta flee. Jennings plays Shasta with refreshing gentleness-listeners get a sense of the boy's sensitivity and fear as he embarks on the adventure of his life. The talented narrator plays Bree with the right amount of dignity and haughtiness. This horse amuses with his witty observations about human behavior, and sense of equine superiority. The horse and his boy hope to travel north to Narnia, and encounter numerous adventures and strange characters, all beautifully portrayed by Jennings. The most memorable supporting characters are another escaped child, a tough girl named Aravis, and her talking mare called Hwin. Jennings brings these two adventure seekers to life with his crystal clear narration. Thanks to his skills as a storyteller, the action moves rapidly from one exciting episode to the next. Evocative music plays at the beginning and end of each side of the tape. This presentation will enchant young listeners and encourage them to read the other titles in the series. It is helpful for students to have read The Magician's Nephew and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe before enjoying this, but The Horse and the Boy stands alone as enthralling, self-contained entertainment. Brian E. Wilson, Evanston Public Library, IL Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition. From Library Journal This is an all-cast dramatization of the third book in Lewis's "Narnia" series. Those who have read all seven books will be better able to put this performance in context, but the uninitiated will enjoy this adventure tale in which, once again, intrepid children outwit nefarious grown-ups. Shasta is a young boy living in Calormene with a cruel man who claims to be his father. One night he overhears his "father" offering to sell him as a slave, so Shasta makes a break and sets out for the North. He meets Bree, a talking horse who becomes his companion. On their way they encounter Aravis, a high-born girl escaping an arranged marriage, and her talking horse. Despite their differences the children and horses learn to work together to reach the freedom they long for. In the meantime, they uncover a Calormene plot to conquer Narnia. The performances are energetic, and the characters easily distinguishable. This recording should not replace the book but rather should serve as an introduction to it. For family listening.ANann Blaine Hilyard, Lake Villa Dist. Lib., IL Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Publisher This is a unique edition of Moreau. The text of the first (American) printed version (1896), with appended footnotes recording all variants up to 1924 and annotations of whatever strictly needs such, takes up little more than a third of its pages. Seven appendices provide the only available transcription of Wells's first draft, details of the emendations that he made before 1900 and reportedly intended to incorporate in a future edition of the book, accounts of six film versions and one stage adaptation of Moreau, critical synopses of Moreau's literary "children," etc. Preceding all this are almost 50pp. on Wells's life and thoughts, with particular reference to Moreau. From The Critics John Clute - Interzone It is hard to think of a more qualified person to give us, at long last, a version of an H. G. Wells novel which could be trusted... Professor Philmus's edition is extraordinarily full.

From Publishers Weekly This captivating, strange book may be most readers' first look at Hong Kong manga. If they've watched any martial arts movies, they'll know what to expect: stunning action scenes that are a lot more important than the underlying plot (in fact, the action may even take the place of a plot). Wong's energetic pen and ink line drawings of colliding bodies are effective, complemented by the rather gaudy coloring. Readers who want stop-action pictures of martial arts combat can enjoy the book on that level, since they fill most of the pages. Beyond that, the story is simultaneously complicated and simpleminded. Although Earth has fallen into the hands of a dictator after meteorites hit the planet, converting most of the surface to molten lava and killing most of the population, the cities and landscapes of the future world look exactly like contemporary settings. The only real change is that the dictator has the power to stage extravagant gladiatorial tournaments to perfect his high-tech warriors. Those who resist the dictator fight with old-style, spiritual martial arts. Their champion is the teenaged Tiger. In this volume, the first of many to come, Tiger goes up against Single-Minded Arhat, Regent of Tibet. The combat is wild-"Titanium doors crumple like tissue paper"-when the two square off for 30 pages of tech-art-enhanced combat. If the final effect is less than thrilling, it may be because the text translation is stiff or that the storytelling conventions of a different culture are unfamiliar to U.S. readers. But comics fans can still enjoy this book by just looking at the pretty pictures. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. That alien beings are here--now--walking among us in human form. From AudioFile In the early days of Puritan Boston Hester Prynne braves the stigma of adultery by wearing the embroidered scarlet "A" on her clothing. Hill's reading captures the story's pathos and gives the reader empathy for the characters while clarifying Hawthorne's views. Hill distinctly portrays each character and reads the narration clearly and swiftly. The pace conveys a sense of urgency and breathlessness. After hearing this novel, readers will understand why it continues to be a classic. P.A.J. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition. Book Description Years before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, Artoo-Detoo and See-Threepio journeyed to the Kalarba system where they encountered the notorious Olag Greck for the first time. After Artoo and Threepio were acquired by the Pitareeze family, the droids found themselves in a series of misadventures with pirates, bounty-hunters, and rock monsters! These stories brim with the wonder and whimsy that made the characters so popular in the films, as Artoo and Threepio do their best to stick together in an often dangerous galaxy. This volume collects the three chapter serial (featuring bounty-hunter droid IG-88) from Dark Horse Comics #17-19, Droids #1-6, and the 8-page story first published in Topps Star Wars Galaxy magazine. It includes all of the original cover art and is wrapped in a new foil-enhanced cover by Kilian Plunkett!

Book Description With the Death Star destroyed, the Empire has declared martial law throughout the galaxy. A thousand worlds have felt the oppressive hand of the Emperor as he attempts to crush the growing Rebellion. As the Imperial grip of tyranny tightens, Luke, Leia, Han, and the rest of the small band of freedom fighters continue to press for the salvation of the planets -- but such a small crew stands little hope of succeeding against the dominant might of the Empire. But sometimes that's all it takes -- a little hope. Dark Horse Comics is proud to present, in an all-new package, the comics adaptation of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back -- The Special Edition. By Archie Goodwin and Al Williamson, this classic adaptation is reprinted from the original Star Wars comic-book series and is now collected with an all-new cover to celebrate the theatrical release of The Empire Strikes Back -- The Special Edition.

From School Library Journal YA-- This first book in a trilogy takes place five years after Return of the Jedi (Ballantine, 1983) by James Kahn. Han and Leia are now married and expecting twins; Luke is continuing his training as a Jedi, while training Leia. The Republic is at peace, having defeated Darth Vader and the evil Empire. Enter Grand Admiral Thrawn, ex-warlord of the empire, with his rogue Jedi knight. They attack the Republic and attempt to kidnap Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia for their own nefarious purposes. It's great fun to romp with the ``Star Wars'' cast of humans, droids, and aliens again. While it is not on a par with Zahn's creative, powerful works such as Cascade Point (Baen, 1987), Heir is well written for what it is. Recommended for YA collections needing a Star Wars fix. --John Lawson, Fairfax County Public Library, VA2- Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.--This text refers to the Hardcover edition. Book Description It's five years after Return of the Jedi: the Rebel Alliance has destroyed the Death Star, defeated Darth Vader and the Emperor, and driven out the remnants of the old Imperial Starlfleet to a distant corner of the galaxy. Princess Leia and Han Solo are married and expecting Jedi Twins. And Luke Skywalker has become the first in a long-awaited line of Jedi Knights. But thousand of light-years away, the last of the emperor's warlords has taken command of the shattered Imperial Fleet, readied it for war, and pointed it at the fragile heart of the new Republic. For this dark warrior has made two vital discoveries that could destroy everything the courageous men and women of the Rebel Alliance fought so hard to build. The explosive confrontation that results is a towering epic of action, invention, mystery, and spectacle on a galactic scale--in short, a story worthy of the name Star Wars.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Amazon.com Sort of funny and fairly bloody, but not bloody enough to be a caricature of violence, Jabba the Hutt: The Art of the Deal is probably one of the more lackluster Dark Horse titles. Bringing together four previously published comics--The Gaar Suppoon Hit, The Hunger of Princess Nampi, The Dynasty Trap, and Betrayal--this collection is an exercise in Jabba worship, a worthy pursuit to be sure but one deserving of more inspired hands. True to its title, the plot line revolves around Jabba's byzantine wheeling and dealing, but the clumsy writing and cartoony art end up making the Hutt look more silly than sinister. A good one for the kids if it weren't such a gorefest. Check out Gorga the Hutt in Dark Horse's top-drawer Boba Fett: Death, Lies, and Treachery for your Hutt fix. --Paul Hughes

Amazon.com Can you imagine a Superman comic book in which another superhero, while sitting on a swing in a park, asks Superman if he believes in God? If you can, you might think it would be very difficult to pull off without being entirely silly (in a bad way). Well, give Mike Allred a great big prize for his wonderfully enjoyable and off-center comic book The Superman Madman Hullabaloo! Not only is there a conversation about the existence of God, this story features mutant underground street beatniks, a super zombie, a health-food food fight, and a skyscraper with legs. That Allred could get away with writing and drawing such a subversive take on one of the most tightly controlled characters in comics is, as Matt Wagner says in his introduction, a testament to the "Allred chutzpah." Perhaps you are wondering what sort of hullabaloo this is. Mike Allred's lovable hero, Madman--a chap whose real identity is unknown even to himself, and who has no real superpowers--runs into Superman. Literally, in a cross-dimensional vehicle, he runs into Superman. That collision leaves them both a bit mixed up, and they're going to have to go from Snap City to Metropolis and back to solve this one. It's no wonder the back cover proclaims this book is "more bizarre than Bizarro." --Jim Pascoe
