From Publishers Weekly This manga adaptation of the popular and controversial Japanese film offers back stories before plunging into brutality and gore. Forty-two ninth graders embark on what they think is a graduation camping trip. Unbeknownst to them, they've been taken to the practically deserted island of Okishima to serve as the next contestants on The Program, a state-sponsored reality tv show. The show's premise is simple, if terrifying: within three days the participants must kill each other until only one student remains. But there's a twist: the students have been fitted with high-tech collars that track their vital signs. If central command detects no one has been killed within 24 hours, it will detonate the explosive bomb collars and kill them all. Each student receives supplies and sets off. Survival of the fittest becomes the greatest equalizer, since the teens are from all walks of life: the loner, the spoiled rich kid, the class clown, the daughter of a high-ranking official and even a few orphans. As protagonist Suuya struggles to protect himself and his romantic interest, others try to outwit and kill one another. Friendships and allegiances come into question and reveal duplicity, betrayal, loyalty, cowardice and insanity. Taguchi's straight-ahead storytelling and Giffen's superior adaptation make the gore easy to follow. The book's scenes of torture, implied rape and killing combine the horror and extreme violence of A Clockwork Orange with Lord of the Flies' exploration of human nature and depravity and aren't for the faint of heart. From Publishers Weekly In 2026, many humans have persocoms, attractive robots designed to make life easier. But when teenage Hideki accidentally acquires Chi, a sexy but exceedingly childlike persocom, his life gets complicated. Chi, who acquires knowledge and forms attachments quickly, soon falls for Hideki and does anything to make him happy-including dance at a burlesque club to earn him cash. Hideki doesn't know what to make of Chi's affections; furthermore, he's appalled by her behavior. Worse, he learns the teacher he adores has run away with his best friend, who leaves in Hideki's care another persocom who's quite shrill. As Hideki struggles through this chaos, Chi takes solace in a picture book apparently written just for persocoms. Things get more complicated when a mysterious couple comes looking for Chi. Might she be more than an average computer servant? Clamp is an all-female manga-creating team whose feminine touch shows in this entertaining, sci-fi soap opera. Besides a plot revolving around personal drama, the art style borrows from the Japanese romance genre, where girls have huge doe eyes and long, flowing hair, and fuzzy, florid backdrops frame sentimental moments. Clamp excels at multiple manga styles, transitioning through realistic establishment panels of urban scenes, the cartoony explosions of facial expressions in comedic moments and science fiction and romance. Presenting the work in original right-to-left format, TokyoPop has also left in the Japanese sound effects that are integral to the art, carefully embedding drawn-to-match English translations within the frame. The result is impressively unobtrusive, if occasionally difficult to read. But discerning young manga fans will appreciate the attention to such details. Clamp (Creator)Yoshimoto, Ray
From Publishers Weekly This group effort graphic novel follows the exploits of Kazuhiko, a former soldier turned private eye who has been given orders to pick up and deliver Sue, a "clover" (someone with extraordinary powers). The seemingly simple task is anything but, and mayhem and adventure ensue. The first installment of a series created by the all-female team known as Clamp, this volume mostly hints at the larger plot machinations at work: a shadowy governing council; a long-lasting feud; a lost love. Still, with its stylish atmospherics and suggestion of suppressed eroticism, the book manages to fulfill all the basic tenets of "girl manga," a genre known in Japan for its appeal to emotions over action-based thrills. Fight scenes and futuristic techno-gadgetry give the wistfulness some weight, but sentimentality prevails. Luckily, so does visual inventiveness, as evocative imagery offsets cloying moments. Clamp's imaginative use of composition and scale lend a visual snazziness that helps the novel transcend the cuteness of its dewy-eyed waifs and broad-shouldered men with delicate faces. Unfortunately, the bland, clunky typeface is particularly jarring in a comic where empty space and images have been so carefully integrated. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc. Grade A, Clover is host to a well drawn, mysterious futuristic world with believable characters and an intriguing story. It's one of the most unusual, and effective, CLAMP manga ever. Book Description As the Clover saga concludes, we flashback to reveal Gingetsu`s first meeting with the three-leaf clover, Ran. Like Sue, Ran was imprisoned for the good of society. But Ran yearned to live a life that was more like a human and less like a lab rat, and broke free from. Now, Gingetsu is ordered to track him down and bring him back to the laboratory. It's a mission he doesn't want to take on, but as everyone knows, the Wizards never give anyone the option to refuse. From the imaginative CLAMP team, responsible for Cardcaptor Sakura, Chobits, and Magic Knight Rayearth, Clover is a cyber-romance that will be hard to forget.

From the Publisher With the character designs and storyline in place, NHK needed a talented shoujo manga-ka to pick up the reins of writing and drawing the series. They picked Keiko Okamoto, creator of the popular series Cute Beat and Yuzu. Her style, with soft lines, gentle characters, and big watery eyes, is quite different from Asamiya`s. The resulting manga is firmly in the mahou shoujo (magical girl) tradition. Book Description One thing great about entering the virtual reality of the Com-Net is that any dream really can come true. When Corrector Yui and the other Correctors explore the realm of Fairy Tale Net, they suddenly find themselves bringing their favorite fairy tales to life. But when Grosser and his henchmen discover them and threaten to delete the Correctors forever, it's time for the crusaders of justice to mount an attack. Joining their fight is a mysterious and handsome young prince. But who can think about love at a time like this? Why, Yui can, of course!

From Publishers Weekly Eikichi Onizuka is a 22-year-old high school dropout in need of some direction. He has a black belt in karate, a Kawasaki bike, a porn collection and a habit of squatting at the bottom of escalators so he can look up skirts. Not an obvious choice for the moniker "Great Teacher." But the seemingly unlikely premise of this manga is that these qualities are precisely what will make Onizuka a success. He might be misguided-he wants to become a teacher so he can meet young, impressionable high-school hotties-but his struggles to find a path to adulthood through the wilds of hormones and violent impulses are not unsympathetic. In fact, the book is wildly popular and has been made into a Japanese live-action TV drama, a film and an anime series. If this first volume doesn't quite explain the work's popularity, it does aptly outline the issues that will operate throughout the rest of the series (sexual frustration, and the tension between Onizuka's tough-guy biker past and his hidden good-guy persona). Tokyopop's English-language version remains faithful to the Japanese original, reading from back to front and from left to right. The drawings are serviceable, with comically dead-on depictions of sweaty-faced guys in various stages of anguish, surprise or shock. Unfortunately, the females are given less subtle shadings of expression-they range from cute and perky to forlorn and perky-and the printing is sometimes difficult to read. However, like Onizuka himself, the writing is breezy and unaffected, and therein lies a good deal of the book's charms. Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc. From the Publisher Fujisawa has been a manga artist since 1969 and GTO is the 3rd series with lead character, Eikichi Onizuka. Book Description Meet Eikichi Onizuka, a 22-year-old virgin and ex-biker. He's crude, foul-mouthed, and has a split second temper. His goal: to be the Greatest High School Teacher in the World! Of course the only reason he wants to be a teacher is so he can try and score with the hot students Before he can become a teacher, he's got to work as a student teacher to earn his credentials. Onizuka may think he's the toughest guy on campus, but when he meets his class full of bullies, blackmailers, and scheming sadists, he'll have to prove it.

From Publishers Weekly This latest installment in the popular manga series continues the fast-paced auto-racing story of Tak Fujiwara, a young racing star on the verge of greater things. Tak falls into racing by default, testing his driving prowess up and down Mt. Akina while delivering orders from his father's tofu business. He eventually hooks up with the racing team Akina Speed Stars, encouraged by the team's leader, Cole Iketani, who becomes his mentor. In this volume, Tak reaches a turning point, hooked on the racing life. Pushing to master the sport, he begins to surpass Cole, and their relationship comes to a head after Tak takes Cole's place in the book's cliffhanger finale. Shigeno sets this book up like a video game, identifying the characters and the specs of their amped-up cars before ushering readers into the story. And like a video game, character motivation, development and empathy aren't quite as important as the hair-raising race action on Mt. Akina. Shigeno's drawing is competent, and he's in full control of his subject. His panels are cinematic, with quick cuts and dynamic visual angles of the cars hurtling down the mountain. His layouts are thrilling and highlight in clear detail the characters' driving techniques. Indeed, the racing action compensates for the soap opera-esque cliches and slow-moving subplots that pad the rest of the book. The book is published in the newly fashionable American manner, to be read right to left, as it was in the original Japanese edition. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Publishers Weekly Flying turtles, an all-girl dorm, 20-somethings falling in love (or at least in and out of crushes), hot tub escapades-these are only a few of the elements that Akamatsu throws together with the enthusiasm of a teenager whose hormones are running amok. The plot revolves around the exploits of Keitaro, an earnest, bespectacled kid who runs a traditional Japanese-style estate that doubles as an all-girl dorm. Dubbed Hinata House, Keitaro's living situation comes equipped with a cast of female characters ranging from cute love interest Naru to the hard-drinking sex addict Kitsune. This setup of a single boy in a house full of girls is not as volatile as it might seem, though: in keeping with the book's target audience of preteen girls, this series' humor tends to be only marginally provocative. One of the book's running gags features Keitaro accidentally falling against or groping one of his female friends, for which he is inevitably knocked silly, but that's as risqu‚ as things get. This heavy reliance on sitcom-type humor helps sustain the frothiness of the proceedings, reinforced by Akamatsu's clean, expert drawings. But despite its occasional, fanciful forays into magic realism, the book never moves beyond the predictable. This in itself would not be a problem-it's the rare mainstream manga that deviates too far from standard tv plot lines-but the book also lacks the quirkiness that can be mainstream manga's saving grace, though missing the imaginative sizzle of a truly innovative or even truly engaging manga, this should nevertheless be comfortingly familiar to readers who want nothing more than what's expected. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. Book Description The Hinata house is about to get some new tenants. Naru's old tutor and secret crush, Seita Noriyasu, stops by with his adopted daughter Sarah, a spunky 7-year-old American. With Naru's affections drifting to the charismatic older Seita, Keitaro is in danger of losing his one true love. As if things aren't crazy enough, there's a new pet in the Hinata House as well -- a flying sea turtle named Tama-chan, who loves to chase the girls around.

Only one thing can resist the Dark Stone`s evil powers: a sacred stone called Rave. Demon Card dispatches an assassin after the Rave Master; a man called Shiba and the only living person with the power to use the sacred stone. Mortally wounded in the assault, Shiba is distressed to learn that he no longer has control over Rave. Will this mean that the world will pass over to the dark side? But wait! Shiba was not alone. Next to him stands a boy called Haru. Miraculously, the boy rekindles life in the sacred stone when he takes Rave in his hands and becomes its chosen successor. With his friends by his side Haru sets out on a quest to locate the other four remaining Raves that supposedly exist somewhere in the world. From Publishers Weekly Since the only way to enjoy this title is to refuse to take any aspect of it seriously, readers can relax and chortle gleefully as they appreciate how the story and art work together in perfectly awful absurdity. In 1641, Romanian sorcerer Kalutika Maybus went insane and turned on his friend, the vampire Deshwitat, whom he paralyzed and sealed inside the body of a monster. Now, a group of scientists arrives on the scene to investigate paranormal activity and, as most of them are being killed by the monster, one sacrifices his life to protect his teenaged daughter by freeing the vampire. Meanwhile, a beautiful blonde exorcist also arrives, too late to help the humans but just in time to battle the vampire. The sensuously glowering vampire intends to keep his oath to the dead man, but he also wants revenge on Kalutika, preferably before the latter finishes his scheme to destroy Earth. Complementing the story, the art is active but incoherent. Adolescent male readers may enjoy panels showing the buxom exorcist wielding a crucifix while wearing a costume that looks like a teddy with a cape; bondage fans may enjoy the panels that show the exorcist and the teenaged girl writhing in the monsters' grip. This scene seems to go on forever, page after page of the characters talking endlessly as they struggle to break loose. There are a few hints that Woo knows how silly the whole thing is, but not enough to make this work more than cult entertainment for the audience that hooted at Plan Nine from Outer Space. From the Publisher Manga legend Shotaro Ishinomori's Skull Man first appeared in Shonen Magazine in 1970 and immediately caused a sensation, selling over 1.5 million copies. The hero, orphaned when his parents were murdered, grows up to use his peculiar powers to take his revenge. The original Skull Man wasn't virtuous but one of the first dark anti-heroes, someone who would sacrifice the lives of innocents in his quest for vengeance. This dark aspect is what made Skull Man so magnetic and successful. Skip ahead 27 years. Kazuhiko Shimamoto, a young, well know manga artist, is contacted by a dying Shotaro Ishinomori and asked to revive Skull Man. Shimamoto's boy hood idol, Ishonomori, faxed him copies of the story and plot notes. He couldn't believe that he was being given the task of illustrating this story and presenting it to more than 110 million fans of Ishinomori's work. Shimamoto had already been involved in updating one of Ishinomori's other earlier works Kamen Rider a precursor to Skull Man but little did he dream that, as one of many Ishonomori disciples, he would be chosen for the death bed collaboration and resurrection of Skull Man. Book Description They took his family, they took his face, and they took his soul. Now, the Skull Man is going to take his revenge. Resurrected from the land of the dead, the Skull Man is hunting down the men responsible for destroying his life and anyone who stands in his way. In an unjust world, the Skull Man will use any means necessary to get the vengeance he seeks! Locked between the lethal but gorgeous assassin Maria and the mutant Spider Man, the Skull Man digs into the conspiracy that gave birth to his powers and those of his partner Garo. Haunted by his past, he will not let them stand in the way of his revenge.
